What was the reason behind making more sustainable bags?
Reducing our impact on the environment is important to us at Parkland, and to our customers. From the products we design to our production processes, we are constantly refining our business and exploring ways we can innovate, including implementing more sustainable fabrics.
One global issue we are passionate about is the use of plastic water bottles and their negative impact on the environment. Changing the fabric used in Parkland products is one way we can reduce the impact of this worldwide problem.
What is the material used to make the bags?
The polyester used for the exterior of Parkland products is made from 100% recycled plastic bottles. By using recycled polyester, we’re able to create products that are more sustainable without any sacrifice in quality. We remain dedicated to prolonging the life of our products and continue to offer a limited-lifetime warranty on everything we make. While using recycled polyester fabric isn’t a solution to the problem of plastic water bottles in and of itself, we believe it’s a step in the right direction and is an important first step as Parkland strives to lead the way in sustainability.
How are Parkland products made?
The exterior of all Parkland products are made of polyester, a fabric traditionally produced using an energy-intensive chemical reaction involving coal, petroleum, air and water. In contrast, recycled polyester is created from 100% recycled water bottles and the production process uses far less energy than the traditional process. Although the production processes differ, the quality of recycled polyester is very similar to traditional polyester. By using recycled polyester, we’re able to reduce the amount of waste that’s in circulation on the planet and make some of it into something useful.
Where are Parkland products made?
The recycled polyester we use is supplied by our partner in Asia, who is a global leader in producing recycled fabric. Our products are then manufactured by our trusted partners in Asia. To see the process of how our recycled fabric is made, please watch our video Bags from Bottles.
We are committed to ensuring our factories follow international standards regarding labor, wages, and safety practices. We conduct regular audits and analyze factory reviews completed by third-party social compliance organizations. We believe in being very hands-on with our manufacturing process and work very closely with our factories.
Is there an additional cost to create bags made from recycled water bottles?
Using recycled polyester costs more than using traditional polyester because of the added costs involved with collecting and cleaning the bottles. Parkland will be absorbing these additional manufacturing costs while providing the same value to customers to ensure that our customers are not charged a premium for a more sustainable product.
What else is Parkland doing to be more sustainable?
At Parkland we continue to research and implement more sustainable practices within our business. The cardboard boxes we use for shipping are made from recycled paper, and the bags we use for packaging are made from recycled material. We also print our seasonal catalogs on recycled paper. We’ve implemented a comprehensive recycling program within our office. The majority of our staff choose to walk, bike or use shared transportation for their daily commutes. And it doesn’t stop there. We are always looking for new ways we can reduce our impact.
